Project Highlights

The following case studies represent a small selection of the diverse work completed by Atlanta Experts. These examples highlight our ability to deliver technical clarity and practical insight across a wide range of engineering challenges—from structural failures and equipment damage to accident reconstruction and forensic analysis. Whether supporting insurance claims, legal disputes, or complex investigations, our team brings a balance of academic expertise and real-world experience to every assignment.

Tornado Damage to Machinery

$100M+ Equipment Loss Claim | Tornado Event | Mechanical Equipment Assessment

Following a catastrophic tornado that removed the roof of an industrial facility, exposing critical equipment to heavy rain and wind, our team was brought in to evaluate the extent of damage across high-value machinery—including Cold Formers and Tee Presses.

We performed comprehensive field inspections, functional and materials testing, and detailed engineering analyses to assess storm-related damage versus pre-existing wear. Our scope included preparation of technical reports, actual cash value (ACV) evaluations, and rebuild cost estimates. We also supported the client through audit reviews of the repair process to ensure accuracy and avoid scope inflation.

With deep knowledge of industrial equipment and firsthand experience in fabrication and machine operations, our engineers provided credible, actionable insight that supported a fair resolution of this $100M+ claim.

Direct Contact Condenser Evaluation

High-Temperature Steam System | Design Review | Atmospheric Operation Analysis

Atlanta Experts was engaged by another engineering firm to perform a rapid, high-level evaluation of a waste heat direct contact condenser system used in a closed-loop steam application for a remote incineration facility.

With only four days available for initial analysis, our team conducted a system-wide review of condenser performance under proposed atmospheric venting conditions. We identified multiple design issues, including undersized air coolers, improper nozzle spray performance, and an incorrectly specified condensate flow rate. We also determined that the condenser, as designed, was unlikely to maintain atmospheric pressure operation on peak temperature days due to altitude-related constraints and limited condensing zone height.

Our work included engineering review of system PFDs, safety valve sizing, vent pipe performance, and transient modeling of steam flow during valve failure conditions. We provided detailed recommendations to improve condenser performance, including geometry modifications, pressure control adjustments, desuperheater integration, and safety vent design—ensuring compliance with state inspection requirements while improving operational reliability.

Exterior Cladding Evaluation – Multi-Unit Residential Development

Moisture Intrusion Dispute | DEFS Cladding Assessment | Expert Witness Support

Our team was engaged to evaluate claims of improper exterior finish installation and resulting water damage at a multi-building residential complex. Specifically, we were asked to assess whether a direct-applied exterior finish system (DEFS) installed at ground level contributed to reported structural damage.

Following a detailed site inspection, document review, and standards-based analysis, we determined that the observed issues—such as sheathing decay and localized moisture damage—were primarily due to improper installation of underlying building components (including flashing, water-resistive barrier, and sheathing), rather than deficiencies in the DEFS itself. Only minor cosmetic cracking was observed, with no signs of widespread failure or improper installation of the cladding system.

Our findings provided clarity in a contested multi-party dispute and were used to support expert testimony and litigation strategy.

Tractor Trailer Rollover Investigation

Accident Reconstruction | Vehicle Dynamics | Expert Witness Support

Atlanta Experts was retained to investigate a tractor trailer rollover that occurred during a left turn at an intersection. The plaintiff alleged that the load inside the trailer shifted, causing the vehicle to overturn. Our team was brought in to evaluate whether the overturn resulted from load movement or vehicle dynamics.

We performed a detailed analysis that included site inspection, review of dashcam and scene photos, vehicle specifications, and turn geometry modeling. Our engineering assessment showed that the rollover was caused by a combination of sharp steering input, tight turn radius, elevated center of gravity, and unladen trailer dynamics—not shifting cargo. We demonstrated that the rollover was caused by excessive speed under the conditions, due to transient lateral forces and tire deflection during the maneuver.

Our findings were presented in a technical expert report used in litigation. The case was ultimately settled, with our analysis playing a key role in establishing the actual cause of the incident.

Roof Leak Origin Investigation

Roof Failure Dispute | Commercial Retail Building | Leak Source Evaluation

Atlanta Experts was retained by the insurance carrier to determine whether reported roof leaks at a commercial building in Atlanta were caused by hail or wind—an essential factor in claim eligibility.

Our investigation included a comprehensive site inspection, leak testing, and roofing system analysis. The structure featured both roll roofing and standing seam metal sections. We identified eight distinct leak sites, all of which were attributable to poor workmanship and improper installation—such as unsealed penetrations, cut roofing around rooftop units, and open vent pipes. No evidence of hail or wind damage was found.

We provided a detailed report including field documentation, leak correlation testing, and repair recommendations, ultimately supporting the insurer in resolving the claim based on the true cause of loss.

Residential Pipe Failure Investigation

Insurance Claim Dispute | Water Damage Assessment | Expert Engineering Report

Atlanta Experts was retained by a homeowner following the denial of an insurance claim related to a copper pipe leak concealed within a bathroom wall. The insurer had initially denied the claim, citing continuous leakage and policy exclusions.

We conducted a detailed investigation that included pressurized pipe testing, subfloor inspection, and analysis of restoration and plumbing documentation. Our findings demonstrated that the leak resulted from a spontaneous pinhole rupture—not a long-term seepage—and was discovered promptly. The absence of mold, rot, or structural deterioration confirmed the leak was sudden, accidental, and hidden from view.

Based on our engineering report, the denial was successfully overturned, and the loss was ultimately recognized as a covered event under the homeowner’s policy.

Stairway Code Compliance & Safety Evaluation

Premises Liability | Code Violation Assessment | Expert Engineering Testimony

Atlanta Experts was retained to assess a stairway at a multi-family residential complex following a serious injury claim. Our inspection revealed that the stairway violated multiple provisions of the International Building Code (IBC), including riser height, tread depth, dimensional uniformity, excessive slope, and handrail requirements.

Photographs taken the day after the incident showed uneven treads, slippery growth, and lack of an intermediate handrail, indicating a clear failure in routine maintenance. Our engineering report provided a detailed code-based analysis, showing that the stairway was unreasonably dangerous and noncompliant across several IBC versions. This work supported a premises liability claim by establishing both construction and maintenance deficiencies.
